What is a Mala?

A mala is a traditional Hindu and Buddhist prayer and meditation bead strand. Traditionally, malas are used for counting mantras during meditation.

A mantra is a specific combination of words or phrases, often in Sanskrit, that is repeated several times — traditionally 108 times. Repeating a mantra helps focus the mind on the meaning and vibration of the words and may be combined with visualization. This practice is traditionally associated with calming the mind and promoting relaxation.

Today, malas are also widely worn as beautiful and meaningful accessories.

Why 108 beads?

The number 108 has special significance in Hindu and Buddhist traditions.

Traditionally, it is associated with:

  • the approximate relationship between the Sun's diameter, the distance between the Sun and Earth, and the number 108;
  • the corresponding relationship between the Moon and Earth;
  • the 108 energy channels (nadis) traditionally described in the human body;
  • the 54 Sanskrit letters, each traditionally associated with masculine and feminine aspects, giving 108;
  • the 108 Puranas and 108 Upanishads.

For these reasons, traditional malas are commonly made with 108 beads.

This mala/bracelet is a special and more compact version featuring 21 coral beads, making it suitable both for meditation practices and everyday wear.

Coral Properties

Coral traditionally symbolizes life force, protection and courage. In crystal and spiritual traditions, it is associated with emotional balance, vitality and energetic purification.

Coral is often chosen as a symbolic talisman for strength, confidence and protection.
